This course is intended as an introduction to political philosophy as seen through an examination of some of the major texts and thinkers of the Western political tradition. Three broad themes that are central to understanding political life are focused upon: the polis experience (Plato, Aristotle), the sovereign state (Machiavelli, Hobbes), constitutional government (Locke), and democracy (Rousseau, Tocqueville). The way in which different political philosophies have given expression to various forms of political institutions and our ways of life are examined throughout the course.

This is the first documentary film on the International College of Philosophy (Collège 　　international de Philosophie: CIPH), founded by, among others, Jacques Derrida and 　　François Châtelet in 1983 in Paris. The film consists of interviews with former presidents 　　Michel Deguy, François Noudelmann and Bruno Clément, current vice-president Boyan 　　Manchev, and with former and current program directors Catherine Malabou, Francisco 　　Naishtat and Gisèle Berkman. The aim of this film is to consider the possibilities of the 　　humanities in general and philosophy in particular under the current conditions of global 　　capitalism. テレビ朝日初の本格シットコムとなる本作は、さびれた温泉旅館・虹の屋の玄関とロビー、従業員室、大浴場の入口、エレベーターという限られた空間で繰り広げられる群像劇。主人公は虹の屋の3代目である父親に反発し家を飛び出すも、うだつの上がらない日々を送っていた柿丘哲郎だ。劇中では哲郎が実家の窮地を救うため10年ぶりの帰宅を果たすも、虹の屋は100年の伝統を誇る老舗旅館の品格やサービスが完全に消え失せ、一筋縄ではいかない従業員の吹き溜まりと化していた。
